Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Scottie was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. Her finder was bitten after they cornered her and grabbed her when they handled her. She did not allow handling during intake and she had a tense body, lip licking and hissing when approached by the counselor. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Limited exam due to fractious nature ENRICHMENT NOTES: 6/11/17 At back under kuranda bed, hunched low, eyes dilated. Briefly escaped during medical treatment. Urinated in fear when caught. Left alone for now. 6/13/17 Back under kuranda bed today, tense posture, eyes dilated. Retreated slowly into corner when door opened. No response to touch. 6/15/17 Crouched on top of kuranda bed, tense posture, eyes dilated. Tolerated pets a little longer today before shifting backwards and crouching again. Still seems wary, fearful. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Scottie was lying down on top of her bed, appearing neutral when approached. Reaction when softly spoken to: Scottie makes eye contact with the assessor and remains in place. Reaction to cage door opening: Scottie becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Scottie focuses on the assessor’s hand and her ears tilt slightly sideways, but she remains immobile when pet. She tolerates gentle petting on her head and body, but remains tense the entire interaction. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Scottie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Scottie tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may need time to warm up to her new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
