04/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: The previous owner reports that the cats have had very little socialization. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Laying crouched in back corner of cage. Arches up with ears flat and eyes dilated when approached with Assess-A-Hand. No hissing, growling, swatting or attempts to bite. Tries to flee towel placed over head. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage recently cleaned Reaction to assessor: Sasha has a tense body and was pressed up against the back wall of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sasha shifts his body weight and his eyes dart around the kennel looking for an exit. Reaction to cage door opening: Sasha flinches then arches his back. Reaction to touch: Sasha’s pin back and he quickly shifts away when the assessor extends his hand out. He seems very stressed, starts breathing rapidly and avoids all contact even when approached slowly. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Sasha has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Sasha is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
