*** SAFE 01/02/18 *** HO, HO, NO!!! ……A volunteer writes: That’s Santa Claws, or Ms. Santa Claws and she’s all decked out ready to be your New Year’s date. She’s a petite little girl with a black Zorro mask and a moo cow coat. She’s very sweet and she begs for your attention. When I offered her my hand, I got an amazing head massage (her head, my hand.) This sweetie is patiently waiting for a spot in your heart and in your home.
**SANTA was surrendered by her owner. She is about a year old and very nervous in the shelter. Please adopt her for the holidays.
MANHATTAN CENTER
Hello, my name is Santa. My animal id is #16448. I am a female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 18-Dec-2017.
ZIP Code From: 10031
Santa is at risk for behavioral reasons. Santa is a nervous cat, who requires space and time to become accustomed to, and comfortable with, her surroundings, and she is struggling to thrive in the shelter. Medically, we have no concerns for Santa, who presents as a healthy cat.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Santa was brought in as a stray, so we don’t have any behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Subjective: Alert, in kennel, hissing and growling
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/19/17 Crouched at back under kuranda bed, head down, eyes dilated, face hidden behind pole. Started deep growling on approach, continued growling when cage cover lifted. Remained crouched in place when door opened. Allowed touch and briefly stopped vocalizing. Resumed growling when door closed. 12/20/17 Calmer today. Crouched under kuranda bed, tense, eyes dilated. Stood and came to the front when door opened, tail up, seemed curious. Leaned and arched into pets, purred. Hissed once, still a little skittish, but actively soliciting attention. 12/21/17 In den on approach. Poked head out when spoken to, alert, eyes dilated. Leaned into pets, but repeatedly withdrew briefly into den, then poked head back out. No hissing or growling today!
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: The cat was hiding in the cat den during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: The cat shows interest and peaks out of the den.
Reaction to cage door opening:: The cat softly meows, eyes wide open, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: The cat began to slowly approach, sniff the assessor’s hand and accepts a brief touch on the head. However, she increased distance while softly meowing inside the den chirping in place followed by grumbling. She seems to be conflicted, hesitant with the interaction and remains cautious with her surroundings.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Curious,Timid,Independent
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: The cat may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
