*** SAFE 04/14/16 ***RIDICULOUS! Whoever owned Sandy until April Fools’ Day, only recently discovered he had been going to the bathroom outside of the litterbox, and had NO idea how long that might have been going on. Um, were they even checking the litter box? Did they think one container of litter lasted months and months and months? Wasn’t that a red flag? Ugh. Anyway, once they pulled their head out of a certain dark, tubular channel and realized what had been going on, it was straight to the shelter for poor SANDY! Oh, and this will surprise exactly no one: he scratched furniture in the home because—SURPRISE—he was not provided with a scratching post. This guy has been given an EXPERIENCE rating from the shelter, and one can only imagine his confusion right now. Sandy is said to have gotten along great with the kids in the home, who must be wondering why they don’t have a cat anymore….and for the kids’s sake, let’s hope they never spill anything, or make any kind of a mess, or who knows where they might end up? Everyone knows SANDY is going to end up in a black plastic freezer bag tomorrow, unless a foster/adopter steps up for him TONIGHT!

04/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sandy’s previous owner reports he has lived with three adults and two children. He was relaxed around children and engages in gentle play. He is shy around strangers and usually takes a few visits before he warms up to them. He had a tense body upon intake, but allowed the counselors to handle him. However, he became defensive during his initial medical exam and attempted to flee. Reaction to Assessor: Sandy was calm and relaxed, lying down in his cage. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sandy looks at the assessor with squinty eyes and blinks. Reaction to cage door opening: Sandy remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Sandy sniffs the assessor’s hand and allows gentle petting. He slowly leans into petting and meows softly, but grumbles slightly when lying down. His body remains tense, but he appears to appreciate petting on his cheeks. Sandy’s previous owners report that he urinates and sprays outside the litter box. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. Placement Determination: Experience Sandy tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
