07/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Sampson was brought in without information on his behavior in his previous home. He lived in a home with other cats and was reported to be under-socialized with people. He was very fearful during intake and was meowing a lot inside his carrier. He allowed some handling, but remained tense. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Tense, crouched in back of cage, allowed handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/09/17 Lying in back of kennel, face in the corner and turned towards the wall. He turns his head and watches me open the kennel door, then tolerates petting along his head and body while becoming tense, eyes looking around the room. Doesn’t respond when I place treats in front of him. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Sampson was curled up by the back and had a low body posture. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sampson looks at the assessor, and then averts his gaze. Reaction to cage door opening: Sampson remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Sampson was hesitant and attempts to shift away to avoid contact, but allows gentle petting with a slow approach. His ears tilt sideways and he blinks during the interaction. He looks at the assessor’s hand when touched along his body, but is tolerant of petting although he appears uncomfortable. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Sampson tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
