ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/03/17 Crouched towards front of kennel, body tense. Makes eye contact and hisses. She tolerates petting along her head and body while turning her head to smell the bear-claw and licking her lips. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 12/04/17 At front of kennel, tail raised. Stress meows and grumbles when spoken to. She tolerates petting along her head and body while leaning in briefly, then turning her head to watch the bear-claw and vocalizing. Fur rises along her lower back and tail and she turns her head to bite the bear-claw multiple times, first in warning. Bats bear-claw as I’m pulling it away. Seems conflicted, playful and curious but very agitated when touched. May be showing signs of petting induced aggression, or may be stressed out from the shelter environment. Sprayed feliway.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Sammie was lying down and vocalizes when the assessor approaches the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Sammie rolls over on her side and displays conflicted behavior. She solicits attention but quickly becomes reactive whenever the assessor makes any sudden movements.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Sammie rises up and hisses.
Reaction to touch:: Sammie tenses up, her ears bend flat and she becomes hyper focused on the assessor’s movements. She hisses then leans away and squints when the assessor extends his hand out. She tolerates brief petting on her head as long as you go slowly. Her tail thrashes around but she leans in and gently rubs her cheeks against the assessor. She seems to appreciate attention with a slow approach but becomes reactive with any sudden movement.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Sammie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sammie tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
