07/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Sami was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Recoils from touch, attempts to escape, some hissing EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Sami was lying down on his blanket at the back of the cage. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sami inches away with wide eyes focused on the assessor’s movements. Reaction to cage door opening: Sami remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Sami lip licks and starts breathing more rapidly when the assessor extends his hand out. He slinks away and dodges the assessor and tries to retreat into the other side of the double kennel. When the assessor pets him he freezes/tenses up, meows and lip licks. He seems uncomfortable and shifts away when he’s had enough. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Sami has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Sami tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
