She displays fearful behavior in the shelter environment and displays distance-increasing behaviors whenever petting is attempted. She does not appear to be thriving in the stressful shelter environment.

09/09/17 12:46 Basic Information: Samantha is a 4 year old brown tabby, female cat. She was given as a gift to the owner from her son since she was 8 months old. The owner cannot keep her anymore due to her moving away. She last went to the vet about 2 years ago and has no known health problems or injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Samantha is shy for a few moments and then will warm up being friendly. She spent time around children ages 4 years and older and was fearful but tolerant around them and didn’t play. She loves playing with her sister in the home and plays exuberant. It is unknown how she is with dogs. Behavior: Samantha has never been in a car, never had a bath and never gotten her nails trimmed. She is afraid of being brushed and may struggle going into a carrier. For a New Family to Know: Samantha is shy and quiet with a medium activity level. She loves chasing her sister around the home and loves to chase balls. She enjoys balls and catnip toys. She’s an indoor cat but her owner had a terrace she enjoys going on. She sleeps in bed with her owner and eats 9 Lives dry cat food. She uses an uncovered litter box with clay pellets. She scratches on a cardboard box in the living but also scratches on the sides of the couch. Behavior During Intake: I opened the box and Samantha hissed right when I opened it. I slowly reached my hand out to pet her and she swatted. I closed up the box to not stressed her out more and couldn’t. Collar or photograph her. When I closed the box up and place back down she had very elongated growls.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Steady VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Bold, Independent KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: adults, 4 year old and older children Behavior toward strangers: shy for a few moments and then will warm up being friendly Behavior toward children: was fearful but tolerant around them and didn’t play Behavior toward cats: plays exuberant Bite or Scratch history: none Litter box training: yes Other notes: Samantha is shy and quiet with a medium activity level. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/13/17- Observed Behavior – growling and hissing, examined in net ENRICHMENT NOTES: 09/13/17 By the back, stiff and alert. Starts growling when approached, despite having two cage covers. Immediate hisses when hand extends toward her and vocalizes loudly, trying to increase distance. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Samantha remains tense, hiding in the cat den during the approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Samantha remains immobile in place. Reaction to cage door opening: Samantha becomes alert with eyes dilated, peeping out from the den. Reaction to touch: Samantha hisses, but seems curious and slowly sniffs the assessor’s hand then began to increase distance and growl while ears flatten to the side. Reaction to being picked up: Unable to perform do to behavior. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Samantha is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely stress in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
