Other notes: He doesn’t like being picked up and held and will jump out of your arms. Foot struggled to get away when being placed in a carrier and will hiss and swat. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Needed to be netted ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/12/17 Lying in litter box with a low, tense body and ears tilted. She hisses as the bear-claw approaches and swats it out of the way with one hard swat before it can touch her. Needs more time to adjust. 07/13/17 Sitting crouched in center of kennel. Makes eye contact as I open the kennel door and hisses. She sniffs the treats I push towards her but won’t eat them in front of me. Tolerates petting along he ahead briefly before giving the bear-claw on hard swat. Not interested in further interaction today. 07/14/17 Low body posture, crouched near the back of the cage. Hisses and inches away when I pull the blue cage cover up. Fearful, not open to interact. Wasn’t interested in treats or wet food. Rapidly breathing, seems very uncomfortable. Displays distance increasing behaviors when approach, doesn’t tolerate any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Samantha has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Samantha is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
