04/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Sage was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He attempted to run and hide during intake and did not allow pick up. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Calm. EVALUATION: Reaction to assessor: Sage was lying down, crouched inside of his litter box with a low body and wide eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sage makes eye contact. Reaction to cage door opening: Sage’s ears flatten and remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Sage backs away as the assessor’s arm extends and he watches the hand as it moves towards him. He tolerates soft petting on his head and would lip lick, backing away further after. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Sage has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Please note that Sage is being treated for an upper respiratory infection at the time of the behavior assessment. This condition may affect some of the behaviors shown during evaluation. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Sage tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
