Hello, my name is Sage. My animal id is #11091. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 29-Oct-2017.
Sage is at risk due to having mammary gland tumors. Sage may require surgery to remove the tumors, there is also the possibility that these tumors are malignant.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Sage was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Hissing and growling in carrier. Once out of the carrier and in a towel/cat mask tried to flee and scratch and was growling and hissing
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Sage was tense and lying down completely flat across the back of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Sage remains motionless and was feint sleeping.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Sage tenses up and starts to growl.
Reaction to touch:: Sage curls up tight trying to shrink her body and flinches when touched on her head. She tolerates petting but remains tense and seems very uncomfortable. After a few soft pets her ears bend flat and she vocalizes, warning the assessor to stop.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Sage has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Please note that this cat is being treated for a medical condition at the time of evaluation. It is difficult to determine at this time how the medical condition may be affecting the behavior. Sage tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
