02/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Rubin was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She appeared nervous during intake and attempted to flee. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Cat was nervous and fearful and would attempt to flee. Will bite without warning if touched, needed to be handled through Freeman net. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 2/5/17 In den, looking through holes. Brief hiss when first spoken to, then no other response. 2/6/17 In den, eyes dilated. Held strong eye contact through holes, flinched when door opened. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat. Reaction to assessor: Rubin was inside a den upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Rubin was wide-eyed, looking out from a hole. After, he looks around from inside the den. Reaction to cage door opening: Rubin’s eyes dilate, but he remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Rubin looks at the assessor’s hand and slowly shifts forward to sniff it. He was hesitant of touch, but allows petting with a slow approach. He lip licks and blinks during the interaction, seeming uncomfortable, but when petting stops he pokes his head out from the den opening and looks around. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Rubin has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home only – Rubin tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
