04/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Rose was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Require net to handle became fractious after several min of handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/18/17 Was advised by medical to give her a day to relax – went through a stressful examination recently. Was growling at me as I passed by. Added to socialization list. 04/19/17 Sitting crouched in front of kennel, body low and head lowered. She looks up when I speak to her and makes eye contact. She growls when I approach and hisses when I attempt to pet her with the bear-claw. Not interested in interacting today – may be uncomfortable due to medical condition. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Rose was curled up tight with her head buried near the front of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Rose lifts her head up and hisses when spoken to softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Rose is alert. Reaction to touch: Rose leans away and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached. She seems very stressed and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish Please note that this cat has a severe medical condition so we may not be seeing any true behavior and behavior may change when the cat’s medical condition improves. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Rose has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Rose is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
