Hello, my name is Rosco. My animal id is #21946. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 01-Mar-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person health – allergies.
Rosco is at risk for behavior reasons. Rosco appears to solicit petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body, begins to hiss, growl, and retreats. Medically, Rosco is obese and needs to be on a calorie controlled diet to return him to a healthy body weight, and also has mild gingivitis.
My medical notes are…

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 03/02/18 Hisses, ears bent flat. Seems very uncomfortable. Not open to interacting at all, not interested in treats. Put up a cage cover and left him alone. Needs more time to adjust. 03/04/18 At front of kennel as I approach, body relaxed. Stands up and vocalizes when spoken to, then begins to lean against kennel door. Allows petting along head and body while leaning in, tail raised and quivering. Stands up on hind legs to head-butt my hand. Very affectionate. Tail becomes pilo-erect and begins to wave back and forth but he offers no further reaction for the remainder of the session. Shows possible signs of overstimulation. Did well today!
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Rosco was lying down, but meows softly and approaches the front.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Rosco meows and presses his head against the cage door, rubbing against it to solicit attention.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Rosco greets the assessor by the opening.
Reaction to touch:: Rosco sniffs the assessor and then head-butts lightly, meowing softly. He accepts petting, but the base of his tail pilo-erects and his tail says erratically from side to side. After a few rubs on his lower back, he hisses and grumbles, and then retreats to his other kennel space. He does not allow additional petting after and hisses when hand extends toward him as a warning.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Sweet
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Initially Rosco solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body he begins to hiss, growl, and retreats from the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat OR Rosco still needs time to adjust to the shelter environment. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before he becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Rosco tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will most likely need time to warm up to his new home and family. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behaviors displayed in the shelter, any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
