History : stray brought in; observed to have no urine for 2 days. Client reported hard mass in caudal abdomen.
Subjective/ Observed Behavior – QAR, friendly. allowed all handling.
Evidence of Cruelty seen – none
Evidence of Trauma seen – none
EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted
Oral Exam: mild dental calculus 1/5; periodontal dz 1/5.
PLN: No enlargements noted
H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic
ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated
U/G: intact male. 2 testicles present, smooth symmetrical. ecchymosis at the distal end of the penis; hard debris palpated within distal urethra.
MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat
CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities
Rectal: normal on gross exam.
urethral blockage – r/o mucous plug vs stone
azotemia — BUN 69, creat 3.4
sedated with DKT (0.2ml each) IM
unblocked using tom cat catheter and sutured in place.
manually expressed bladder and flushed 3x with sterile LRS saline
Cerenia 0.4ml IV q24hx3 days
convenia 0.4ml SQ
SImbadol 0.45 ml SQ q24hx3 days
22g catheter placed
LRS fluids 15ml/hr.
Monitor fluid ins / outs
CBC / chemistry
Temporary waiver due to illness.
Presented on 4/5 as a stray for inability to urinate. unblocked under sedation and tomcat catheter sutured in place. Recovery uneventful.
mild neutrophilia and eosinopenia
-QAR in kennel, allows all handling but prefers hiding toward back of kennel.
– tomcat catheter in place and P dribbling bloody urine
– No palpable bladder on abdominal palpation.
– urine present along fur
post urinary blockage
Decreased IVF to 10ml/hr x24h. reassess in 12 hours.
CD or Urinary SO diet — if no interest, ok to feed any food.
Cerenia 0.4ml IV q24h
Simbadol 0.45 ml SQ q24h
Prazosin – final dose, today.
monitor fluid ins / outs
repeat chemistry panel.
monitor appetite, consider mirtazapine if no appetite
