*** SAFE 11/03/17 *** 7 year old Romeo was dumped at the shelter by his owner. He is nervous and not knowing why he is there. Romeo would love to be adopted to a furever home this time.

Hello, my name is Romeo. My animal id is #10568. I am a male white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 23-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.
Romeo 10568 is at risk for behavior concerns (Experience determination). He has been fearful in care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior. He accepts some petting, but will show discomfort when he’s had enough attention. Romeo has no medical concerns

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Due to client’s warning about Romeo’s behavior towards stranger, counselor wore cat gloves to interact with Romeo. Romeo was more interested in his surroundings and would move away when being collared. To avoid further aggravation, Romeo was quickly put into his cage.

Is this cat having litter box issues?: Yes
Basic Information:: Romeo is a 7 year old male white and black cat that has lived with previous owner for about 7 years. Romeo has not been taken to the vet and has no known injuries or health issues.
If yes, Please elaborate:: Client stated that when Romeo is upset about something he will pee and poop outside the litter box. This happens rarely, probably every 2 to 3 months.
Previously lived with:: Romeo previously lived with three adults.
How is this cat around strangers?: Romeo is fearful and aggressive towards strangers. When strangers visit his home, Romeo becomes territorial and will approach strangers right away, hissing and scratches.
How is this cat around children?: Romeo has not interacted with children and owner is unaware of how he would react.
How is this cat around other cats?: Romeo is aggressive towards cats.
How is this cat around dogs?: Romeo has only interacted with small dogs and will hiss at the beginning but eventually will warm up and is tolerant. Romeo has not interacted with with large dogs and owner is not sure how he will react.
Behavior Notes: When upset, Romeo will pee and poop outside of his litter box. Previous owner has tried giving Romeo a bath but he will struggle and tries to scratch. When previous owner tried to trim his nails, Romeo would not allow her to trim more than one paw at a time and will run away. Romeo does enjoy to have his coat brushed and is not bothered when having to be put into a carrier. When sleeping, Romeo is not bothered when being woken up but if the person is persistently bothering him then he will swat. Romeo has a history of scratching the previous owner’s son.
Bite history:: Romeo has not tried to bite another animal or human.
Energy level/descriptors:: Romeo has a medium activity level.

Medical Notes: Romeo has no known medical issues.
For a New Family to Know: Romeo is an affectionate, confident and independent cat that likes to roam around the entire house, especially after his previous owner has just finished cleaning. When at home, Romeo will follow you around and may sit on you or next to you. Romeo likes to play with balls, strings, wand toys, and toy mice and was kept as an indoors only cat. Romeo sleeps anywhere in the house he is comfortable and enjoys tuna as a treat. Romeo was fed dry food once a day. Romeo is litter box trained and used an open litter box with Fresh Step litter. Romeo did not have any scratching post and so his favorite place to scratch was the sofa.

Reaction to assessor:: Romeo remains neutral, lying down on his cage bedding during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Romeo becomes alert with eyes wide open.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Romeo seems curious, stands up in place, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Romeo slowly engages while eyes are wandering, sniffing the assessor’s hand then allows the touch. However, he began to stress meow when touched on the body then flehman reacts, and hisses while being cautious with his surroundings.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Romeo may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
