08/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Ren was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. She appeared scared during intake and allowed limited handling to be conducted. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – timid tries to flee ENRICHMENT NOTES: 8/17/17 Curled up under kuranda bed, wide-eyed, alert. Tolerated very brief pets, then slowly crept to other kennel, body held low. Became extremely tense when room noise increased, eyes became fully dilated, started trembling. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Ren was crouched over by the back, neutral. Reaction when softly spoken to: Ren appears tense and he focuses on the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Ren becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Ren focuses on the assessor’s hand and sniffs it, but he shifts away slowly to avoid touch. He allows gentle petting and he shifts away, but appears uncomfortable; his tail is lowered and tucked. He does not display any further reaction. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Shy, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Ren has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and shows discomfort with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Ren tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She will need time to warm up to her new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
