08/04/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Raisin Bran was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Allows exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/03/17 At front of kennel, stress meowing and hissing. She backs away as the cage door opens and then comes back forward. Tolerates petting briefly, leaning in as fur along tail becomes very bushy and pilo-erect. She quickly turns and swats the bear-claw. Conflicted behaviors – needs more time to adjust. Gobbled up all treats given while grumbling and growling. Sprayed feliway and gave her a shoreline cover. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Raisin Bran was lying down at the back of the cage with her tail curled at her side. Her eyes widen and she hisses when the assessor removes the cage cover. Reaction when softly spoken to: Raisin Bran is alert, her ears rotate and she starts to grumble. Reaction to cage door opening: Raisin rises up and continues hissing. Reaction to touch: Raisin Bran grumbles then slowly approaches the front with her tail lowered and sniffs the assessor. She seems uncomfortable but still allows gentle petting on her head and cheeks. Her tail pilo-erects immediately when touched and she seems to prefer short interactions. After a few soft pets she whips around, hisses and becomes hyper focused on the assessor’s hand. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Independent, Curious POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Pet-induced aggression – Initially Raisin Bran solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before [name] becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Raisin Bran tolerates attention and petting but may be stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
