04/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Raindrop was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Okay to take out of carrier and then quickly got aggrevated fractious used net for exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/18/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body, face pressed against kennel wall. She blinks when I speak to her and watches me as I open the kennel door, remaining in place. She does not respond to treats when offered and doesn’t eat them. She tolerates touch on her head, blinking her eyes and licking her lips. Needs more time – nervous and unsure. 04/19/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body and wide eyes. She makes eye contact when spoken to and comes forward slightly to sniff my hand. She eats the tuna I offer and tolerates soft petting on the head, eventually beginning to lean in gently. She allows soft petting on her head for duration of session, standing up and raising her tail. She returns to position in back after session has ended. Still nervous but has potential to warm up here. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Raindrop was lying down flat across the back of the kennel with her tail curled up at her side. Reaction when softly spoken to: Raindrop makes eye contact but doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Raindrop becomes alert and focused. Reaction to touch: Raindrop slowly leans forward and sniffs the assessor when approached. She closes her eyes then gently nudges the assessor’s hand for attention. She seems unsure and only allows limited contact before she becomes uncomfortable. When she gets upset she quickly whips around and swats. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Raindrop has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Raindrop tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
