08/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: During intake Pumpkin was timid and didn’t allow handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous. Good for all medical handling. Did not hiss, strike, or try to bite. Did not need net to restrain. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/13/17 Sitting crouched in front of kennel with a tense body, tail wrapped round him. He retreats to the back when I open the kennel door and tolerates petting with a tense body, ears tilted. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Pumpkin was curled up by the front of the cage with his tail wrapped around his body. Reaction when softly spoken to: Pumpkin looks around, scanning his surroundings then backs away when the assessor talks softly to him. Reaction to cage door opening: Pumpkin remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Pumpkin’s eyes widen, he lip licks and he backs away slowly when the assessor extends his hand out. He keeps his tail tucked under his body and dodges the assessor’s hand when attempting to pet him. His body feels tense, he tolerates brief contact and watches the assessor’s hand when pet along his body. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Pumpkin has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Pumpkin tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
