05/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Prune was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissed on approach, very tense. Examined in net — swatting, growling, hissing, biting net ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/03/17 Lying with a low body in back of kennel, she turns to face me when spoken to and makes eye contact. She flattens her ears as the bear-claw reaches towards her and tolerates petting while hissing and backing away. Needs more time to adjust. 05/04/17 Lying in litterbox with a low body and flat ears. Makes eye contact when spoken to. She hisses as I reach towards her with the bear-claw and continues to hiss as I pass it along her head and body. Not interested in treats. Needs more time to adjust. 05/05/17 Hiding behind her litter box, tries to avoid all eye contact. Shifts around & stays hidden when spoken to softly. Flinches and becomes alert when the kennel door opens. Wide eyes, ears pointed forward. Starts lip licking and lowers her head when approached. Ears tilt sideways and she starts to hiss when I extended my hand forward. She swats and displays distance increasing behaviors when attempting to make contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Prune has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Prune is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
