08/15/2017 AT RISK MEMO
A1119782 Polo – NHO determination; Polo appears calm and neutral and may solicit attention when coaxed, but he appears to have pet-induced aggression. He remains neutral when approached, but starts to vocalize loudly when his cage door opens. He does show interest and initially head-butts for attention, however seems conflicted and will retreat suddenly. He repeated this behavior, but suddenly bites without additional warning signs.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Name and A#: Polo A1119782 Date: 8/14/2017 KNOWN HISTORY: Polo came to the shelter as a stray, so we don’t have any behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment. During intake, Polo was nervous and allowed limited handling. He eventually became overly nervous, backed away, and attempted to flee. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: During his initial medical exam, Polo was friendly and allowed all handling. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/26/17 Came forward and swatted at a volunteer today while they were attempting to place a pipe-cleaner toy on his kennel, causing scratch marks on their hand. After the incident, staff approached his kennel and he rushed to the front of his kennel, appearing very aroused and overstimulated. When another staff member approached his kennel, he hissed and displayed distance-increasing behaviors. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Polo was relaxing at the front of the cage. Reaction when softly spoken to: Polo looked up at the assessor, body and eyes soft and relaxed. He began to rub against the cage bars while vocalizing loudly. Reaction to cage door opening: Polo continued to vocalize loudly with increasing volume, and swatted at the front of the cage. Reaction to touch: Polo leaned in to touch with the Assess A Hand but then backed away suddenly and bit. He then leaned back in to petting with the Assess A Hand, repeating the same behaviors – soliciting touch, relaxed, and then biting with no appropriate warning signs. Reaction to being picked up: Did not attempt ACTIVITY LEVEL: Lively VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Demanding, Bold RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Polo is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He tolerates limited handling before becoming agitated and attempting to swat, scratch and bite. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Pet-induced aggression Initially Polo solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body he will swat or attempt to bite. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Polo becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
