Behavior Note:
Piski is not thriving in our busy adoptions room, and he has begun hissing when approached for interaction. He squeezes by the back of his cubby and looks very uncomfortable when petted gently. He has not escalated or shown any aggression or other distance-increasing behaviors, but it is in Piski’s best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:
05/04/17
In cubby, becomes alert when approached and hisses. Retreats to the back and wraps tail tightly against body, lip licking. Hisses when door opens and hisses as I extend my hand. Will sniff chicken treat when offered, but doesn’t eat it and looks at me. Gave him some space and interacted with another cat. Treat was gone when I returned and he hissed at me again. Gave another piece of chicken and he ate it in front of me. Did some clicker training, rewarding each time his body posture relaxed and when he makes eye contact. Attempted to touch near the end of session, but he squeezes his body against the back and hisses. Did not push and gave him more treats. Sprayed feliway.
05/07/17
Hunched over, behind his litter box. Becomes tense and alert when approached and shifts his body to squeeze by the rear of the cubby. He doesn’t hiss today, but focuses on my hand. He flinches when touched and will blink and lip lick repeatedly during the interaction. Very uncomfortable. Gave a piece of tuna, which appeared to make him relax a bit. His body softens up as he goes to sniff it and lick the tuna. Doesn’t eat until I give him some space.
5/8/17
Curled up tight behind litter box. Started hissing and lip licking immediately when door opened. Stiff posture, hunched down. Showed no interest in treats, but repeatedly swatted assess-a-hand when offering. Sprayed feliway.
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: No change
Reaction to assessor: Piski looks tense, crouched position at the back when approached.
Reaction to cage door opening: Piski body stiffens up and retreats with tail curled close to the body.
Reaction to touch: Piski accepts the touch, but remains immobile squinting in place with no interest.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Experience
Piski may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home.
We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

Profile:
Basic Info:
Piski A1110429 is a male black & white polydactyly (extra toes) DSH feline who is being surrendered along with his “brother” Sandy A1110428 due to the owner being hospitalized. They haven’t been seen by a vet recently and currently have no known health issues/injuries.
Socialization:
Piski hasn’t been exposed to strangers. He hasn’t been around dogs but was gentle, playful, relaxed/affectionate with the adults and other cats in the home. Piski hasn’t bitten/scratched any person or animal.
Behavior:
During car rides Piski will meow or be relaxed. He isn’t bothered with being placed into a carrier or being held/pet. The following hasn’t been done to know his behaviors: being disturbed while sleeping/resting, having his nails trimmed, being brushed or bathed. There were multiple cats in the home and it wasn’t noticed if Piski is one who scratches on the couch/walls in the home. The cats didn’t have a scratching post.
For a New Family to Know:
Piski is described as friendly, affectionate, playful (at times) & quiet with medium activity level. When the owner is home Piski follows them around. He’s an indoor cat that sleeps around the home, eats dry & wet Meow Mix cat food 2x a day and uses an uncovered litter box with clumping litter within.
Intake Behavior:
Piski had a soft body, eyes and allowed all handling. He allowed to be scanned (-), collared & have his pictures taken; he’ll lean into pets as well. Piski didn’t seem to mind being picked up/held and was placed into a carrier for transport with ease.
