Hello, my name is Piku. My animal id is #12581. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 14-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Piku is at risk for behavior concerns. Piku is not thriving and is very nervous and fearful in the shelter. Piku is also overweight and needs to be placed on a controlled diet in order to lose weight. Behaviorally, Piku has been assessed as needing a cat experienced home.

Upon intake, Piku allowed pets within his carrie. Piku’s body was tense and she stayed at the back of her carrier and did not want to come out. The more I pet her the more tense she became.
Basic Information:: Piku is a 13 year old female gray and white domestic short haired cat. Piku lived with previous owner for about 12 years and was given to owner by a friend. Piku was surrendered because previous owner’s girlfriend is allergic to cats and cannot have them in the house. Piku has no injuries or health issues and was last taken to the vet in March of 2017.
Previously lived with:: Piku previously lived with 2 adults and one cat.
How is this cat around strangers?: Piku is shy around strangers and will hide. Piku will come out after a few minutes and approach strangers and allows pets on the head.
How is this cat around children?: Piku has interacted with children aged 1 and 2 years old. Piku will keep her distant and hide from the children. Piku may quickly approach children to sniff but will run away.
How is this cat around other cats?: Piku previously lived with an 13 year old female cat named Diamond. Piku was relaxed and affectionate with Diamond and liked to sleep together on their cat bed.
How is this cat around dogs?: Piku has not interacted with dogs.
Behavior Notes: Piku often scratches furniture and does not use her scratching post. During car rides, Piku is afraid and will meow throughout the ride. Piku has never been given a bath and struggles when her nails are being trimmed. Piku is not bothered when having her coat brushed or when being disturbed as she sleeps. Piku struggles when being put into a carrie and will try to run away. Piku is not bothered when being picked up but will only allow when she wants to.
Bite history:: Piku has never bitten another animal or human.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior -calm, allows exam
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/15/17 Curled up on bedding, head down, eyes dilated. Lay in place when door opened, closed eyes. Remained stiff, started lip licking when pet along back. Sprayed thunderease. 11/16/17 In top cubby, pressed against back wall, face in corner, eyes fully dilated. Shifted in place when door opened, trying to retreat further. Flinched and lip licked when touched, seemed terrified. Sprayed thunderease.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Piku remains tense, crouched position hiding at the back of the cage cubby.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Piku becomes alert with eyes dilated.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Piku body stiffens, lip licks while ears remain erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Piku accepts the touch, but remains immobile in place showing no interest with the interaction.
