PETER PAN – 10783

***SAFE 12/10/17***HELP WRITE A FAIRYTALE ENDING TO SWEET PETER PAN’S SAD TALE! A volunteer writes: Sweetest boy in town. Peter Pan is a sharp looking fellow. Unlike the more common grey tabby, Peter Pan is a striking black tabby. He has bold, beautiful ebony markings. As you stroke his sleek fur you will also discover he has a stylish buff-colored undercoat. And those eyes! You could get lost in them. Big, gorgeous and green. As I approached his cage, Peter Pan greeted me with the sweetest small mew. His mew was so tiny, he sounded like a baby kitten. Shy at first, I gently called his name and offered him some treats. The treats worked their magic! In almost no time at all, he gave me cheek rubs and head butts. Since I was sitting on the floor he stepped out of his cage and onto my lap. Purring like a fine tuned Ferrari he sniffed me all over. With a few more cheek rubs and head butts, I knew I had won his heart. Peter Pan is sweet, gentle and easy to fall in love with. He will win your heart.
PETER PAN was surrendered by his owner who said he was becoming unfriendly with other cats. Peter Pan is already neutered and needs a new furever home and some follow up dental. ONLY HAS TIL NOON TOMORROW!
MANHATTAN CENTER
Hello, my name is Peter Pan. My animal id is #10783. I am a desexed male black tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 25-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – not good with resident animals.
Peter Pan is at risk due to being diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Infection which is contagious to other cats. Peter Pan will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics. There are no known behavior concerns for Peter Pan at this time (Average determination).
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

Date of Intake: 10/25/2017
Spay/Neuter status: Yes
Is this cat having litter box issues?: Yes
Basic Information:: Peter Pan is a five year old brown tabby male cat that was surrendered stray for behavior reasons. Owner got him from a friend as a kitten and had him for almost five years. Peter Pan has no visible sign of illness or injuries.
If yes, Please elaborate:: Peter pan does not get along with the other cats in the home and would not use the same litter box with them. Instead, he would poop and pee outside the litter box or on towels.
Previously lived with:: Owner’s nine and 12 year old children and five cats
How is this cat around strangers?: He is friendly and outgoing around strangers.
How is this cat around children?: He spent time with owner’s nine and 12 year old children and was relaxed, affectionate and respectful around. He was also gentle when playing with them.
How is this cat around other cats?: He lived at home with five other cats (Sphynx)–Two adult and three kittens and did not get along with them. He would hiss at them, would not play with them and hides for days.
How is this cat around dogs?: He did not spend time with dogs
Behavior Notes: Peter Pan has litter box accidents only because he did not like using same litter box with the other cats. Owner bought a another litter box which she placed in a different bathroom but because the other cats used it, peter pan refused to use it. He isn’t bothered if his nails are trimmed, or his coat brushed and he loves to be picked up and held. He isn’t bothered if placed in a carrier or disturbed while sleeping.
Bite history:: He has never bitten a human or another animal
Energy level/descriptors:: Low
Has this cat ever had any medical issues?: No
For a New Family to Know: Peter pan is friendly, affectionate, playful and mellow. He is a great companion to children and would do well in a home as the only cat. He also loves human attention so much. He would be in the same room with you and would sometimes follow you around the home. He slept on the children’s bed with them, was fed wet and dry cat food but prefers dry food and used a hooded litter box with clumping cat litter. And he scratched on a smooth wood scratch post.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 1 adult, 2 children, and 5 other cats Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Relaxed and respectful Behavior toward cats: Did not get along with them, will hiss and hide from them for days Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Has litter box accidents, but the owner reports they had two litter boxes shared between five cats and he didn’t get along with the other cats. Energy level/descriptors: Peter pan is friendly, affectionate, playful and mellow with a low activity level. Other notes: He is a great companion to children and would do well in a home as the only cat. He also loves human attention so much. He would be in the same room with you and would sometimes follow you around the home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – Allows most handling. Raises hind end in the air for scratching, but then yowls when I examine his empty scrotum.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Curled up at back of cubby, eyes dilated, a little wary. Lay in place when door opened, sniffed and ate a few treats, warmed up immensely. Leaned hard into pets, stood and started cheek-rubbing cage furnishings after door closed.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Peter Pan meows and immediately approaches the front, rubbing on the cage door.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Peter Pan continues to solicit attention and rubs his body all over the door.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Peter Pan greets the assessor by the opening.
Reaction to touch:: Peter Pan immediately hops onto the assessor’s lap and accepts petting all over. He begins to purr and leans in for more rubs.
Reaction to being picked up:: Peter Pan is a bit tense (possible due to size), but remains calm when held.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Sweet,Affectionate
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination
Potential challenges comments:: Peter Pan’s previous owner reports that he was eliminating outside the litter box. Please note that his previous living situation may have contributed to the behavior seen (he previously lived in a home with 5 other cats who all shared a single litter box). They added a second litter box, but since the other cats also used this litter box, he didn’t use it. We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. We also recommend that he be provided with numerous litter boxes throughout the house as he adjusts to his new living space. The extra boxes can be removed as he learns the space and successfully defecates in his main litter box(es). Please note that he has been reported to use the litter box during his stay in the care center.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Average
Behavior Asilomar: H – Healthy
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats
Recommendations comments:: Peter Pan remains social and easy to handle with her human caretakers, but please be aware that he may be uncomfortable around other cats. Their previous owner reports he did not get along with the other cats he lived with, resulting in litter box issues. Due to the described behaviors, we recommend Peter pan goes to a home with no other cats OR into a multi-cat home with cat parents experienced with introducing new cats slowly and gradually over a long period of time.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Peter Pan interacts with the Assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Although he displays behavior appropriate for beginner cat parents, due to his litter box accidents in his previous home we recommend he goes to a home with adopters with some cat experience.
