04/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Pepper was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Meowing, alert and social. Allows all handling. Difficult to fully assess due to injury but seems to be friendly and appreciates attention. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/18/17 Lying in back of kennel, curled in a relaxed position. She lifts her head slightly when I open the door and looks at me. She has trouble focusing her eyes in on one point. She remains in a relaxed body position and flinches when I pet her head. Allows soft pets along her head and body with closed eyes. 04/19/17 Lying in back of kennel. Lifts head and makes eye contact when spoken to. She hisses when I approach her with my hand – not in the mood to interact today. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Pepper was lying down on her blanket and looking over at the assessor with relaxed eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Pepper looks around at her surroundings and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Pepper is alert and lip licks. Reaction to touch: Pepper hisses when the assessor extends his hand out and shifts away from contact. She flinches, closes her eyes when rubbed on her head and seems very uncomfortable. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish Please note that this cat has a severe medical condition so we may not be seeing any true behavior and behavior may change when the cat’s medical condition improves. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Pepper has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Pepper tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
