ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/24/17 Standing in front of kennel, body tense and ears slightly tilted. Stress meows when spoken to, then begins to growl. She eats the treats I place down while grumbling, so I click and reward to build an association. She vocalizes loudly and raises her paw with ears flattened when I reach towards her with the bear-claw. Hisses each time I place a treats down or speak to her. Crouched in front of kennel watching me as I make my way across the room while stress meowing and growling after interaction has ended. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust. 12/26/17 At front of kennel, vocalizing loudly and making eye contact with ears forward. Head-butts kennel door. She remains in front of her kennel and allows petting along her head and body while leaning in and giving head-butts, tail raised and quivering. Begins to purr. She remains calm and allows all petting for the duration of today’s session – Doing much better! Beginning to warm up. Ate all treats given. 12/27/17 Seems more outgoing and confident today. She sniffs my hand then gently leans in, and accepts petting all over. Her tail perks up and starts to quiver. She doesn’t seems to mind being touched along her back. Occasionally she’ll vocalize and turns around, but she doesn’t display any further reaction. Purrs and she solicits attention. Doing great! Loves treats
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Pepper was lying down by the back, calm and relaxed.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Pepper looks at the assessor and makes eye contact, but does not come to the front.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Pepper becomes alert, but remains calm.
Reaction to touch:: Pepper sniffs the assessor’s hand and meows softly. She appeared unsure, but accepts petting and leans in for cheek and chin rubs. She becomes tense and focuses on the assessor’s hand when pet along her body, but will gently use her paw to bat the assessor’s hand away (does not extend nails). She will continue to allow gentle rubs on her head after.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Independent
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Pepper tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
