05/15/18
Yowling, striking hissing
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
05/15/18
Lying in front of kennel, face tense and ears tilted. Vocalizes and stress meows, then hisses. Strikes through kennel door. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust.
05/16/18
Standing in front of kennel, pupils dilated and ears forward. Ears tilt when spoken to and she swipes at me through the door. She sniffs the scratcher curiously when I place it in her kennel and eventually gives it a soft head-butt. Tolerates slow and gentle petting along the head and body while leaning in and raising tail halfway. Conflicted behavior – has potential to warm up! Will try clicker training.
Cage Condition:
Cage is recently cleaned
Reaction to assessor:
Penny was tense and sitting up near the front of the kennel, looking around at her surroundings.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Penny’s ears rotate and she becomes hyper focused on the assessor’s movements.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Penny’s ears flatten and she starts to low growl.
Reaction to touch:
Penny leans forward to sniff the assessor’s hand, squints, then backs away. Her tail thumps, she displays distance increasing behaviors when approached and currently doesn’t allow any handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Laid back
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Penny has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
New hope only
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Penny is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
