02/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Penguin was brought in without information on his behavioral tendencies in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Tense, tries to flee. No sign of aggression. Examined mostly in net due to constant attempts to flee. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 02/13/17 Laying towards the back, alert, but eyes not dilated. Retreated slightly when door opened. Leaned away and avoided gaze when touched. 2/14/17 Resting in litter box on approach. Stiffened, eyes became dilated, stood partway when door opened. Remained tense and immobile when pet. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Penguin was sitting upright, slightly crouched over near the back. He looks at the assessor with soft eyes upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Penguin blinks softly and appeared tense. Reaction to cage door opening: Penguin slowly shifts to his opposite kennel space and lies down. Reaction to touch: Penguin sniffs the assessor’s hand with a slow approach and accepts petting on his head and body, but he flinches slightly when touched around his shoulders and remains tense throughout the interaction. Reaction to being picked up: Penguin is tense, but allows handling and remains immobile. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Penguin has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center, trying to flee with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced cat parent – Penguin tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
