05/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Pebles was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: At fron of carrier hissing, lunging. Unable to handle awake. Sedated with Telazol ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/18/17 Lying crouched in back of kennel with flat ears, breathing heavily. Makes eye contact when spoken to and tolerates petting while flattening ears all the way down, backing away with eyes squinted. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Pebles was curled up tight in the back of the kennel with his tail wrapped at his side. Reaction when softly spoken to: Pebles remains frozen at the back with his eyes focused on the assessor, and didn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Pebles lip licks and remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Pebles starts to grumble and his eyes dart around as he inches away from the assessor. He briefly tolerates petting on his head with a very slow approach then moves away with his body lowered. He seems very uncomfortable and quickly moves forward trying to escape the kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish Please note that this cat has a severe medical condition so we may not be seeing any true behavior and behavior may change when the cat’s medical condition improves. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Pebles has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Pebles tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Hemay be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
