05/04/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: There is no known history as Passionfruit was brought into our care center as a stray. She was timid for a few minutes during intake, but allowed the counselor to collar her. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Allowed all handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/03/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body and flat ears. She watches me out of the corner of her eye as I approach and tolerates petting with a tense body, backing away with flattened ears. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Passionfruit remains in back of kennel with a low body position Reaction when softly spoken to: Passionfruit makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks around the room Reaction to cage door opening: Passionfruit’s ears flatten as the cage door opens and her breathing accelerates Reaction to touch: Passionfruit tolerates petting along her head and body with flattened ears, lowering her body Reaction to being picked up: Passionfruit avoids being picked up by retreating to the corner of her kennel with a low body ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent, Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Passionfruit has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may be uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. -Uncomfortable with pickup – Passionfruit did not appear to like being picked up during their behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while she is still adjusting to her new home. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, Adult Only
***Behavior continued*** Passionfruit tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
