07/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Parker was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. She was found in the finder’s back yard and stated she is fearful, attempting to run. Although she was fearful during intake, she allowed the counselor to handle her. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Nervous, vocal, resists medical handling and tries to escape ENRICHMENT NOTES: 7/16/17 Curled up with siblings. Woke and became alert when door opened, but seemed lethargic. Leaned away, but tolerated ouch and pickup. Seemed uncomfortable, but too sick to really respond. 7/17/17 Dozing with siblings on approach. Lay in place when door opened. Hissed once when touched, then allowed all pets. Seemed really sleepy or lethargic. Dozed off again quickly. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Parker looks at the assessor with almond-shaped eyes, curled up next to siblings. Reaction when softly spoken to: Parker looks at the assessor before averting her gaze. Reaction to cage door opening: Parker becomes alert, but remains in place. Reaction to touch: Parker was hesitant and lowers her body, but allows the assessor to pet her gently on her head and body. She seems to warm up a little, but after a few strokes she shifts away and curls up next to her sibling in her other kennel space. Reaction to being picked up: Parker is slightly tense during pick up, but allows handling. After a moment, she wiggles to be placed back down. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Kitten socialization – Parker is a young kitten that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes she has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent – Parker tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
