04/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: The previous owner reports that the cats have had very little socialization but Paisley is “very sweet”. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Laying crouched in back corner of cage with face forward. Arches up with ears flat and eyes dilated when approached with Assess-A-Hand. No hissing, growling, swatting or attempts to bite. Tries to get away using all paws when picked up for exam. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Paisley was lying down across the back of the kennel with her head facing the wall. Reaction when softly spoken to: Paisley’s ears rotate and her body twitches when the assessor spoke to her softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Paisley remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Paisley leans away with wide eyes then curls up tight with her tail wrapped around her. She starts to breathe rapidly when touched, seems very uncomfortable and continues lip licking throughout the interaction. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Paisley has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Please note that Paisley is being treated for an upper respiratory infection at the time of the behavior assessment. This condition may affect some of the behaviors shown during evaluation. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Paisley tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his or her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
