02/09/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Oscar was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He appeared friendly during intake. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous and fearful, avoided touch but did not aggress, would flee if given the opportunity EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Oscar was inside his den, looking out from the holes on the side of the carrier. Reaction when softly spoken to: Oscar continues to look at the assessor, lip licking. Reaction to cage door opening: Oscar remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Oscar focuses on the assessor’s hand and shifts his body to avoid being touched. He accepts petting with a slow approach, but his body is tense. He looks uncomfortable, his eyes darting around and lip licking throughout the interaction. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Oscar has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and would attempt to flee whenever he has the opportunity. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home only – Oscar tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
