I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 09/11/2017 from NY 10037, owner surrender reason stated was PERS PROB.

A1125249 Oreo – Oreo is at-risk with a NHO determination. He displays fearful behavior and does not appear to be thriving in the stressful shelter environment. He hisses and growls when approached for interaction while focusing on the person. He shifts away in attempts at petting and will swat when overwhelmed. He may be more defensive since he is declawed, but he allows gentle petting and leans in for cheek rubs when pet with a bear claw scratcher.

09/11/17 21:28 Basic information: Oreo is a 3 years old neutered male declawed black and white cat. He was a gift from a frien and lived in his previous home for 1 year and 2 months. He was surrendered to MACC due to a personal problem. He has no known injuries or health problems. Socialization: Oreo was fearful around strangers. He lived with a 4 years old child and was fearful around him. He was not interested in playing with adults or children. He has not spent time with other pets. Behavior: The previous owner stated he hid in fear. He cried while he was transported to our care center. The previous owner has never given him a bath, trim his nails, or brushed his coat. Oreo was afraid of being picked up and held. He was afraid of being placed inside the carrier. For a new family to know: He was described as an independent, fearful and quiet cat. His activity was mostly low as he would stay hidden for majority of the day. He was kept indoors only. He had an uncovered litter box During intake: Oreo was not receptive to handling. His eyes were very dilated. He hissed and swatted at the admissions counselor. Admissions counselor attempted slow blinking but Oreo started growling. No further interaction to avoid causing Oreo more stress.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Bold, Independent KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: adults and a 4 year old Behavior toward strangers: fearful Behavior toward children: fearful Other notes: Former owner described him to be independent, fearful and quiet cat. His activity was mostly low as he would stay hidden for majority of the day. He is also declawed. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/12/17- Observed Behavior – in net, trying to bite, growling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 09/13/17 Standing upright, behind kuranda bed, looking around with dilated eyes. Lifts paw as hand extends and focuses on it, growling. When coaxed, he looks away and remains extremely tense. Not ready to interact yet. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Oreo remains tense, crouched position at the back during the approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Oreo remains immobile in place with an intense stare. Reaction to cage door opening: Oreo becomes stiff body and growls in place with eyes dilated. Reaction to touch: Oreo avoids contact, hisses with ears flat turned sideways and swats (declawed cat). Reaction to being picked up: Unable to perform do to behavior. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Oreo is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
