05/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Oreo was brought in with limited information on his behavior in his previous home. His previous owner stated he has bitten and scratched family members, but details about the previous incidents including trigger, warning signs, and severity are unknown. They also report she has tried to escape the home whenever someone opens the windows or doors. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: At first calm and quiet. Allowed ear cleaning and all initial handling. When placed on side for shave/CT, immediately jumped up, dug her claws into VT arm, and tried to bite. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/23/17 Allows petting with wide eyes, leaning in gently and stretching her legs out. She allows all petting along his head and body, tensing up when someone new walks into the room. 04/25/17 Allows petting along head and body with a raised tail, leaning in. Body tenses and she hisses with continued petting, making eye contact. She calms down and allows petting again when you stop and approach slowly. 04/27/17 Comes forward when called, stretching with a relaxed body and soft eyes. She reaches out to me through the kennel door with claws un-extended and allows petting along her head and body with a raised tail. She’s been showing improvement, but was stressed out today by a neighboring cat. 04/28/17 Sweet girl, always comes forward to greet as soon as I approach. Gently guides my hand for cheek rubs. Didn’t mind being picked up, remained calm in my arms. Offered her some treats and some plush toys. Tends to focus on the door because of the dogs barking outside. 04/29/17 At the front, rolling around and reaching out with soft paws. Scent rubs the bars of the kennel. Social and sweet. Appreciates all attention. Had a relaxed body when picked up. Doing a lot better! EVALUATION: Reaction to assessor: Oreo immediately chirps and approaches the front, reaching out gently with her paws. Reaction when softly spoken to: Oreo rubs against the cage door and solicits attention. Reaction to cage door opening: Oreo remains soft and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Oreo chirps and head-butts, arching her back and leaning in for rubs. Her tail sways a bit, but she continues to solicit attention and nudges the assessor’s hand for more petting. Reaction to being picked up: Oreo remains calm and continues to purr when held.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Lively VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Shy initially, Sweet, Affectionate BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Experience Oreo’s behavior with her caretakers in the care center has improved a lot and she has been social and tolerant after taking a few days to acclimate. The behavior team has interacted with her frequently and picked her up repeatedly during his stay, and he has demonstrated behaviors appropriate for an average cat parent in the care center. However, due to a bite incident with her previous owner we do recommend an adopter with some cat experience.
