Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and children around 3-9 months old Behavior toward strangers: Fearful and will run and hide if the individual tries to approach. Behavior toward children: Keeps to herself Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: While her owner was in the kitchen Oreo ran up and swatted at her leg. Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Affectionate, mellow and quiet with a medium activity level Other notes: She enjoys seating on the rocking chair and rocking herself to sleep, and likes to play with her owner’s hair MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Fractious ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/26/17 Hisses whenever the room door opens and looks around, grumbling. Kennel space may not be the best for this chunky girl. Focuses on me when approached and grumbles, but seems to slowly relax a bit when coaxed, blinking and lip licking. Becomes alert whenever someone walks in the room and goes right back to hissing and growling. Sprayed feliway and offered shoreline cover. Will come to the front and attempt to swat, but retreats to the back and grumbles some more. Sprayed Feliway. 03/27/17 Less hissy today, but will still hiss when someone comes near the kennel. Will try to swat during cleaning, growling loudly and hissing. Sprayed feliway and spent some time coaxing in front of kennel. She warmed up slightly, leaning against door and head-butted! Started to eat, but when she was full, she hissed again and grumbled, lying down by covered portion of cage and blinks softly. 03/28/17 Reactive every time the door opens or when someone walks by. Hisses and rushes forward attempting to swat. Grumbles and is very alert when approached. Takes time to coax her forward, gives soft meows, tail lowered. Seems unsure, constantly looking around scanning surroundings. Allows petting through the door, brushes cheeks. Hissed when door opens. Wary but eventually comes forward when spoken to softly. Nudges hand and tolerates petting on head with a very slow, gentle approach. Gave some treats, sprayed feliway. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Oreo has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Oreo tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. She may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
