Staten Island Center
Hello, my name is Onyx. My animal id is #8592. I am a desexed male black kitten at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 months 2 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 02-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.
Onyx 8592 is at risk for an upper respiratory infection (URI) and possible liver disease. Behaviorally, Onyx solicits attention and tolerates petting, but may play roughly and tends to be easily overstimulated, using teeth and nails to play. We recommend an adult-only home for him.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Onyx’s previous owner reports he is shy for a few minutes around strangers, but will play gently once he warms up to them. When being picked up and held, Onyx becomes overstimulated fast and will try to scratch.Onyx is described as friendly, playful, confident and independent. He has a high activity level and likes to play with all types of toys. In the home, he liked to follow the owners around from room to room. Onyx was kept indoors only and is litter box trained. In the home, he used an uncovered litter box with clumping litter.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – trying to scratch and bite
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/07/17 Onyx is sitting in front of the kennel and meows when kennel is approached. When kennel door opens he moves further away but comes forward shortly after.Onyx is very curious of his surroundings and very playful but needs more socialization to be comfortable with being pet. Sprayed feliway and given a catnip toy. 10/05/2017 Onyx is very energetic. He loves to play with various kinds of toys. He would quickly get overstimulated then become rowdy while playing with his toys and jumped around grabbing them and would wrestle with his bed/chew on it. Whenever I was holding onto one of his toys he would try to grab onto it to play with it and would retract his claws and begin to play gently once he noticed that my hand was there. He also liked to carry around his little monkey teddy bear.
Cage Condition:: Cage is recently cleaned
Reaction to assessor:: Onyx not come to the front but looked at me- was calm, relaxed, and friendly. (Usually comes to the front and rubs against the kennel door and reaches out with his paws though)
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Onyx came to the front of the cage, reached out with paws.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Onyx remains soft and relaxed.
Reaction to touch:: Jumped up playfully to grab arm with paws, lightly mouthed. (Usually allows petting through the cage door & rolls over purring and sticks out paws when doing so)
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate,Lively
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Playful
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Kitten rough play
Potential challenges comments:: Onyx solicits attention and tolerates petting, but may play roughly. He is a young and high-energy kitten that tends to put his or her teeth on skin and/or swipe without retracting claws. Although this appears to be typical kitten behavior and motivated by play, it is important to note that this behavior occurs and that he may also be easily overstimulated. We recommend daily rigorous play with fishing pole-type toys and ending play sessions before he becomes overstimulated or if he begins to target human hands or feet. We also recommend using puzzle feeders to keep Onyx engaged and to exercise his brain in addition to his body.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Onyx solicits attention and tolerates petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to his tendency to play rough and his history of biting, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home.
