07/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Shy and will hide Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Relaxed and respectful. Didn’t get along with one of the cats in the home. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Cautious and feisty with a low activity level Other notes: He doesn’t like being picked up/ held or being pet for long periods of time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Feral ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/13/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body. He shifts his weight and flinches as my hand moves towards him. Tolerates petting along his head and body while tilting his ears and remaining still, head lowered onto floor. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Ollie was tense and crouched in his litter box with his ears bent flat. Reaction when softly spoken to: Ollie lowers his head, and his tail starts to flicker. Reaction to cage door opening: Ollie remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Ollie buries his head in the litter box when the assessor extends his hand out. He remains completely immobile and tolerates touch; his body feels tense and he doesn’t make eye contact with the assessor. He seems very uncomfortable and stayed crouched in his litter box at the back of the cage. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Ollie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Ollie tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
