***SAFE 11/03/17***HANDSOME TEN YEAR OLD OLIVER WAS DESCRIBED BY HIS FORMER OWNER AS “FRIENDLY, MELLOW & TALKATIVE” BUT ENDED UP AS NEW HOPE ONLY….Oliver was brought to us because his owner is moving. This chubby ten year old boy is extremely upset at everyone at the moment and needs some time to decompress and get acclimated out of the shelter environment. OFFER OLIVER A NEW “LEASH” ON LIFE BY OFFERING TO FOSTER OR ADOPT.
Staten Island Center
Hello, my name is Oliver. My animal id is #10355. I am a desexed male white cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years old. –
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 21-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won’t allow.
Oliver 10355 is at risk for behavior concerns (New Hope Only behavior determination). His previous owner reports he is fearful around strangers and will hide from them until he is comfortable. He displays distance-increasing behavior while in the care center and does not currently allow touch; he will hiss, growl, and swat when petting is attempted. We recommend placement into an adult-only home through a New Hope partner. Medically, Oliver is geriatric and obese.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Oliver has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Oliver is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has been growling, tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. We believe Oliver has potential to warm up as we know his previous behavior profile in a home environment. Currently, in the care center, he does not appear happy and seems highly stressed. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
