Olive Oil becomes stiff and alert when approached for interaction and will display distance-increasing behaviors when petting is attempted. He focuses on the person with wide and dilated eyes, and will continue to hiss to avoid contact.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Steady VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/3/17- Observed Behavior – hissed, retreated from touch ENRICHMENT NOTES: 7/31/17 Laying on side, nursing kittens, soft posture. Became alert on approach, eyes fully dilated. Started hissing when door opened. Struck offered assess-a-hand and jumped top back of cage, dislodging babies. 8/1/17 Laying on side, nursing kittens, soft posture but eyes dilated. Sat up when door opened, very tense. Fled when attempted touch. Seemed to have no response to kittens being handled, only when pet herself. 8/2/17 Nursing kittens at front. Sat up and became alert on approach, retreated to back of cage. Fled to other cage when door opened, eye dilated, very tense posture. Continued to move around cage to avoid touch. Ate treats once left alone. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Olive Oil remains tense, sitting upright by the back of the cage during the approach. Reaction to cage door opening: Olive Oil distance increases with tail tucked, alert with eyes dilated. Reaction to touch: Olive Oil avoids contact and hisses with an intense gaze at the assessor. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Olive Oil is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
