07/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Ohio was brought in with limited information on his behavior in his previous home. He came from a home with multiple cats and was reported to be under-socialized with people. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – hisses, allows restrain but hisses, he might flee EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Ohio was lying down in his litter box, looking at the assessor with his face half hidden. Reaction when softly spoken to: Ohio averts his gaze, but would focus on the assessor again. Reaction to cage door opening: Ohio hisses and shifts his body to hunch over. Reaction to touch: Ohio hisses as the assessor extends their hand and focuses on it. He lip licks and shifts away to avoid contact, but allows brief gentle petting with a very slow approach. He hisses even harder after a moment and lip licks again. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Ohio has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and will attempt to flee with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Ohio tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
