03/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Noona was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Fractious ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/27/17 Lying down, flat, by the back. Looks with soft eyes, but starts to breathe rapidly. Lifts head up when hand is extended, tense and ears tilted. Did not attempt to touch, but spent some time in front of kennel, coaxing. She lip licks and looks away. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage rearranged Reaction to assessor: Noona was pressed up against the back wall of the kennel with her body lowered. Reaction when softly spoken to: Noona slowly turns her head towards the assessor and starts slow blinking. Reaction to cage door opening: Noona flinches and becomes alert. Reaction to touch: Noona lifts her head up and watches the assessor’s movements with wide, dilated eyes. She flinches when touched and has a tense/stiff body when rubbed. Her body weight shifts and she leans away trying to avoid all contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Noona has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Noona tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
