*** SAFE 06/20/17 *** Noir is a shy kitty who isn’t doing well in Adoptions at the Brooklyn Care Center. She would benefit most from placement with a New Hope partner where her behavior can be assessed in a calmer, more stable environment.
NOIR was dumped with housemate because her owner was moving to a smaller apartment – she has some dental issues which may need tooth extractions – friendly girl!
Brooklyn Center

06/16/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Noir A1114786 is at risk for deteriorating behavior in the care center and a current New Hope Only behavior determination. Noir does not appear to be thriving in the shelter environment, and does not allow handling at this moment. When approached, Noir arches her back, hisses, displays distance increasing behaviors and does not relax with attention. The behavior team has attempted to clicker train her in hopes to get her to open up, but she has not warmed up to her caretakers. Due to Noir’s stress levels in this kennel environment, we recommend she move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible.

06/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Shy, but will warm up after a few minutes Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats or dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes, uses a hooded litter box with crystal litter Energy level/descriptors: Owner described Noir as friendly, affectionate and independent with a medium activity level. Other notes: When at home she likes to be in her favorite spot. She likes to play with balls and stuffed mice. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous, but allows all handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/14/17 Lying in cubby, curled up with tail wrapped around body and tilted ears. She tenses her body when spoken to and tolerates petting along her head and body. Hisses after a few moments and remains tense for the rest of the interaction. Nervous and unsure. Sprayed feliway. 06/15/17 Lying in cubby, tense with tail wrapped around body. Ears tilt when I open the cubby door and she hisses. Ignores the treats I place by her. She tolerates petting while hissing and turning her head to watch the bear-claw, ears flattened and body low. Not interested in interacting today. Sprayed feliway. 06/16/17 ACS’s reported Noir was displaying distance increasing behaviors when they were cleaning her cage this morning. When I took a look at her she was still very upset. She was hunched over in the back of her litter box and started low growling when I opened the cubby door. Tense body, her ears were bent flat and she started hissing when spoken to softly. She wasn’t open to interacting today. Sprayed feliway and left her alone. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Noir has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Noir is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
