MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Lunging, hissing, swatting
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/02/18 At front of kennel, leaning against kennel door and vocalizing, ears forward. Tenses body and stress meows when touched through cage, eyes fixated on my hand. He watches as I open the cage door and begins batting at my hand, ears titled and claws extended. Conflicted behavior. Gobbles up treats offered so I click and reward each time he approaches me, raises his tail or solicits attention. Responded well to clicker training – body posture and face relaxed after interaction has ended. Will continue. 01/03/18 Lying on top of kuranda bed, body relaxed. Tilts ears when cage door opens and tolerates petting briefly while squinting eyes and flattening ears. Hisses and raises paw when the bear-claw passes along his back. Tense today. Needs more time to adjust. Left him some treats. 01/07/18 At front of kennel, vocalizing and leaning against kennel door while making eye contact. Begins to purr. He tolerates petting along his head briefly before whipping his head around and hissing, ears flattened. His body posture relaxes when I take out the treats so I click and reward each time he allows touch or lean sin. More tolerant of touch when given treats. May be showing signs of petting induced aggression.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Niko is lying on top of his kuranda bed as the assessor approaches, body and face tensed with tail curled around feet.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Niko avoids eye contact and stares ahead when spoken to.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Niko licks his lips and watches the cage door as it opens. Begins to rapid breathe with ears tilting slightly.
Reaction to touch:: Niko flattens his ears and hisses when touched. He whips his head back and feint bites the air in front of the assessor’s hand in a warning as it passes along his back.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Niko has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Niko may be a little more independent and may be intimidated by small children. He may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
