Hello, my name is Nicki. My animal id is #15102. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old. –
I came into the shelter as a stray on 01-Dec-2017
Nicki is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Ringworm, which is contagious to other animals, and can also be transmitted to humans. Behaviorally, Nicki has been assessed as needing to be placed with a New Hope partner only.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Subjective: Nervous and scared, stays low to the table, scrunched posture, but no signs of aggression
Cage Condition:: Cage is re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Nicki is asleep on approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Nicki wakes up and continues to lay in place, looking at the assessor with dilated eyes.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Nicki puts his ears sideways and begins to hiss and growl.
Reaction to touch:: Nicki repeatedly strikes the assess-a-hand.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Nicki has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Nicki is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
