***SAFE 10/20/17*** HANDSOME NEO IS A BIT NERVOUS AFTER OWNER DUMPED HIM FOR HAVING “TOO MANY” NOW THIS HEALTHY BOY MUST EXIT BECAUSE HE IS NOT LIKING THE SHELTER ENVIRONMENT. HE ALLOWS GENTLE PETTING. HE IS ALREADY NEUTERED AND HEALTHY. NEEDS SOME TIME TO RELAX BUT YOU MUST RESERVE HIM BY NOON!
Brooklyn Center
Hello, my name is Neo. My animal id is #8718. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks i am about 4 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender – aco on 03-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as poor choice – too many animals already.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Neo is at-risk with an adult only determination. He displays fearful behavior and does not appear to be thriving in the shelter environment. He focuses on the assessor and lowers his body when approached and will hiss when the cage door opens. He grumbles when petting is attempted and will flinch when touched, hissing throughout the interaction.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 10.74 lbs
Pre-surgical exam, anesthesia, and surgery performed by ASPCA. Green linear tattoo placed on ventral abdomen.
Details on my behavior are…
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Will flea, fearful, but allowed exam. Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Neo was curled up tight in his litter box with his tail wrapped at his side. Reaction when softly spoken to: Neo remains still with his eyes focused on the assessor, lip licks then slowly lowers his head. Reaction to cage door opening: Neo tenses up then hisses and retreats to the back of the kennel. Reaction to touch: Neo arches his back, keeps his tail lowered and low growls when the assessor extends his hand forward. He flinches when touched, continues hissing but tolerates petting on his head as long as you go slowly. His body feels tense/stiff and remains hyper focused and follows the assessor’s hand when touched along his back. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful Potential challenges comments: Neo has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Experienced, adult only Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable RECOMMENDATIONS: No young children BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Neo tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
