05/11/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/11/17 16:50 Nefi is friendly and outgoing towards strangers and usually approaches for a good nudge. She lives with a 16 year old and has spent time around children of all ages. She plays gently with both adults and children and lives with one other cat and dog at home. She is relaxed and affectionate with both the cat and female Shih tzu pup. She plays a mixture of gentle and exuberant with them. She has never bitten another animal or human. Nefi is relaxed during car rides. She enjoys baths and brushing and will tolerate having her nails clipped. She enjoys when her owner picks her up and holds her and isn’t bothered when it’s time to go into her carrier. She doesn’t mind when awoken from her slumber and typically will find a new spot to lay. Nefi is friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow, assertive, independent, and talkative. She has a low activity level and when ready to play enjoys tossing around balls, string, and catnip. When her owner is home, she follows her around or sits in her lap. She’s kept indoors only and sleeps in either her owner’s daughter’s room on her bed or in her owner’s bed. She’s litterbox trained and always goes in her hooded litterbox full of clumping litter. She scratches on a leather couch and has never had a scratching post. Nefi eats Nine Lives wet food, half a can, in the morning and Cat Chow dry food, about 1/3 cup, in the evening. On intake, counselor was able to collar but directly after Nefi began to hiss. Counselor did not want to stress her out more so no more handling was done.

Other notes: When her owner is home, she follows her around or sits in her lap. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Subjective: Hissing and growling in the carrier. Netted for brief exam. Pt swatted and lunged several times, hissed and spit. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Nefi was grooming, but looks at the assessor and meows softly. Reaction when softly spoken to: Nefi continues to meow softly and will respond each time when spoken to. Reaction to cage door opening: Nefi becomes alert, but her meows are still soft. Reaction to touch: Nefi hisses with sudden movement, but shifts forward to sniff the assessor’s hand. She continues to meow and will look around, but with some coaxing she leans against the assessor’s hand. She head-butts lightly and leans in for petting, but will hiss whenever she appears unsure. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Sweet, Curious POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Nefi has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent – Nefi appears to appreciate attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents and any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
