02/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Nabila was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. Her finder stated he first saw her 2 months ago but felt bad for her and has been attempting to get her into the shelter. He was able to get her into the crate by luring her with food, but once inside she scratched at the bars to get out. She had a low and tense body during intake, attempting to flee and backing away from the assessor while trying to interact. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 02/20/17 Nervous, hissing, striking, tried to flee. 02/21/17 Hissing, growling, urinated in feral den. Netted for exam but then was able to examine patient while scruffed after net was removed. 02/22/17 Sitting on top of feral den, flees and hides in den when approached. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Nabila has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Placement with a New Hope partner – Nabila is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
