MANHATTAN CENTER
Hello, my name is Mustard. My animal id is #7792. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks i am about 1 years 2 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a data import – incoming on 01-Oct-2017.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Mustard is at-risk with an adult only determination. He displays fearful behavior and does not seem to be thriving in the shelter environment. He spends his time hiding inside his den, however he tolerates soft gentle petting when approached slowly. He remains immobile during interactions and gives soft eyes, but he doesn’t feel comfortable enough to come out of his den.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Assessment Date: 9/24/2017 Retest Date: Retest Reason: Next Test Date: KNOWN HISTORY: Mustard was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. He lived with adults and other cats and was reported to eat both wet and dry food. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: nervous but good for medical handling Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Mustard was lying down, calm and relaxed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mustard looks at the assessor with soft eyes and remains in place. Reaction to cage door opening: Mustard becomes stiff and alert and presses his body against the back wall. Reaction to touch: Mustard was hesitant and focuses on the assessor’s hand, but allows gentle petting and lies flat against the ground. He focuses on the hand when pet along his body and lip licks. His ears tilt sideways and he lip licks throughout the interaction, seeming very uncomfortable. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy Timid Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful Potential challenges comments: Mustard has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Experienced, adult only Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Mustard tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He will need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
